A transition from being a “person in the bike industry”, to rediscovering what it meant to be a “bike rider” again. (something I lost along the way).

The first step was to commit myself to some silly damn event and sigh up for it. Check - 2008 Simpson Desert Bike Challenge.

Then train... hmmm, less so... more kinda... “when I can fit it in”. Repeat again in 2009. (with more key event knowedge, better preperation, but less actual training)

Which brings us to 2010. In February I hired a personal trainer. Then in June, the game really ranmped up. What can only be described as 12 weeks of pure dedication. Strict diet. Up to 10 spin classes a week. Swimming at least 6 times a week. And that was in addition to the time spent with the personal trainer. (3-4 sessions a week)

Did it bring “results”? Well... yes. This years event was moved. The SImpson desert was closed due to flooding. (I know... a desert - flooding) So we instead found ourselves lining up at the start of the Anne Beadell Highway near Coober Pedy. heading due west out towards Marilinga and the old town of Emu. (where the British set of atomic bombs in the 50’s). And then back again.

590klm of the roughest corrugated roads in Australia. Intermixed with deep bulldust, pea gravel and sand. The Perfect place to test out the Pugsley and my own newfound fittness.

So what did I learn?
1) Fatbikes rule this terrain. I was (at times) passing people that I had no right to be passing. (based on real world fittness etc)
2) Suspension seatposts rule on full rigid bikes on corrugations.
3) I now know what it’s like to ride 130klm off-road in a day. And then back up and do it again the next day... and the next...
4) two pairs of bib knicks worn over each other can help.. a little... as can a very liberal dose of chamois cream.
5) be extra nice to your support crew. (in my case, my wonderful wife)
6) I didn’t believe it was possible. But I was actually “too tired to eat” at the end of many stages. My wife had to force me to eat. Scary.
7) If the sight in one eye goes all “foggy”, it’s a sign of extreme dehydration. STOP and drink lots to recover. (I was ordered off the bike by the medical team at the 60klm waterstop on day 4)
8) you can surprise yourself and astonish others when you push yourself to your own absolute physical and mental limits.
9) I know it’s strange to say this, but I want to feel that way again.
10) I should have listened to Pat 3 years ago and trained properly.
11) I should have listened to Richard 3 years ago and ridden a Pugsley the very first year.

Will I head back to the desert?

Yes. I have unfinished business in the Simpson.

Getting a completion rate of 77% on the Anne Beadell is nice. Temperatures were noticably down on 2008. (where we hit a max' of 52 degrees celcius, and an average of 39) THIS year, 2009, was considerably more comfortable for human beings. We hit the max' of 42 twice I think. Both in the mid afternoon. Otherwise it hung around the 30 degree mark for most of the riding time.

But the difference this year was the sand. OH MY GOD... the sand!!!

The recent dust storms have really "fluffed" the sand and dust up and made the riding far worse than last year. I really found myself struggling to ride sections that I know I cleaned last year.

This years goal was simple. To make sure that when I was swept... that I was thoughourly STUFFED atr the time. In 2008 I always felt fine when I was swept. I was just slow.

My plan this time was to push myself much harder. So much so that i was royally stuffed everytime the evil Sweep got me.

I succeeded. My legs were in pain and my body hurts a hell of a lot.

More text and images to follow.

Closing comment... will I go back?

Answer... hell yes. Once more I've learned a lot. So has my wonderfull wife (my exceptional support crew). Is 2010 the year of the Surly Pugsley?

maybe... maybe...

11 days to go

11 days until we leave. hard to believe that it's really been a year.

I've well accepted that a lack of training will be an issue. (and had the rider had some fitness the result might have been a little better)

But I'm looking at things logically this time. The larger tyre of a 29er gives a larger (longer) contact patch. Combined with say... a 2.4" wide tyre and the end result should be a sand eating machine.

Plus... the SDBC is really a long "fireroad" trail. (with lots of dunes and sand) So "snappy cornering" and the like don't really matter out there.

In fact... I'm thinking that the bigger 29er wheels might be just the thing for the event...

www.salsacycles.com/bigmama08.html

The Salsa Big Mama is up for consideration. 4" (100mm) of travel. Thanks to the guys at Ibis for designing such a great frame. Everyone else was riding short travel XC style bikes and there I was on the 5.5" travel Mojo.

Going with the large bag 2.5" Syncros tyres was a great decision, I was able to ride sandy sections that the other fitter, stronger (lighter) riders were walking. Technique and bike set-up were very important. (a serious extra dose of fitness might have helped me though). As was the DT Swiss carbon rear shock and the Manitou Minute MRD forks.

The Sram
